Our History

Inspiring Sri Lanka’s digital journey since the very beginning:

The LK Domain Registry which is a not-for-profit organization established in 1990 in Sri Lanka, is the sole administrator of the top-level “.lk” domain. It initiated several high-impact social empowerment initiatives with the aim of driving the mandate of enhancing Internet usage to foster a better digital landscape within Sri Lanka, through its Partnership Division and e-Learning Division. Community Training Established

2019

Suhurusara, previously the training arm of LK Domain Registry which was established in 2009, had various initiatives with the able guidance of an expert team of industry veterans, under the leadership of Prof.Gihan Dias, with the far-reaching aim of ensuring equitable access to transformational technology, knowledge, and tools in order to ensure nationwide growth and development of ICT skills.

The training initiatives, which include island-wide Train the Trainer (TOT) programmes, have over the years trained countless educators and students in schools and vocational training centers across the country.

The training sessions focus on hands-on experience in addition to theoretical knowledge, encouraging experimentation and innovation with a view toward nurturing the next generation of ICT trailblazers.

IT Yahamaga

2018, 2019

A series of training workshops (IT Yahamaga) was conducted by Sarvodaya-Fusion in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and facilitated by LK Domain Registry to ignite curiosity and passion and prepare the next generation of youth to take the reins of the future of ICT in Sri Lanka. Targeting educators and students in semi-urban and rural communities, with over 25,000 students trained from 2018-2020, the project facilitated access to state-of-the-art technology, training, and resources, in order to expand youth horizons and introduce them to the world of opportunities made accessible through ICT.

Suhurusara

2023

In 2023, the training division was rebranded as “SuhuruSara” to mark the next chapter in LK Domain Registry’s efforts to empower Sri Lanka’s Digital Future through island-wide ICT knowledge dissemination and skill development.

Nenasala Centers and Web Competitions

2019, 2020, 2021, 2022

The Nenasala Centre programme is conducted with the aim of disseminating training and skills development with greater efficiency and reaches throughout Sri Lanka. Under this training model, the LK Domain Registry Training Division conducted train the trainer programmes on Joomla Web Design and Python for Nenasala personnel, at the LK Domain Registry premises as well as online.

ICT History in Sri Lanka

1960s -2014

The History of ICT in Sri Lanka’ is a project conceived by LK Domain Registry with the objective of documenting for posterity the milestones reached by inspirational individuals, their tireless efforts, and momentous events that contributed towards the implementation of ICT in Sri Lanka.

Local Languages Support Centre / Helpline

2010 - Present

While Internet usage is ubiquitous today, the predominance of English as its ‘first language’ can pose a disadvantage to non-native speakers. A joint initiative between LK Domain Registry and Theekshana R&D, the Local Languages Support Centre and Helpline aims to facilitate equitable use of the Internet for Sinhala and Tamil language users, by providing support as well as training and awareness programmes to organisations and individuals, in incorporating local languages when navigating the Internet.

V. K. Samaranayake Grants Scheme

2004 - Present

Named after Professor V.K. Samaranyake, a renowned pioneer in the IT industry in Sri Lanka, the grants scheme aims to facilitate and enhance research, training, and development capabilities and opportunities at both national and international levels, in Networking and Communication related to the IT industry. Primary beneficiaries of the grants are full-time post-graduate students at MSc, MPhil, and PhD levels in recognised universities and institutes in Sri Lanka.
